No. In California, the driver education certificate is a requirement for permit applicants under 18. An adult 18 or older applies for an instruction permit without a course certificate, but takes the same knowledge test, with the same 80% passing score.
What does an adult need for a California permit?
The DMV's list for applicants who are at least 18 is short. The application stays valid for 12 months after you apply, so you have time to pass the tests.
- Complete the California Driver's License or ID Card Application.
- Bring proof of identity and California residency, or a California ID card.
- Pay the application fee at the DMV.
- Pass the vision exam and have your photo taken.
- Pass the knowledge test: multiple choice, based on the California Driver's Handbook, 80% to pass.
How are the rules different from a teen's?
| Rule | Under 18 | 18 and older |
|---|---|---|
| Driver education certificate (DL 400C) | Required for the permit | Not required |
| 6 hours of professional training | Required | Not required |
| Who rides along on a permit | Parent, guardian or licensed driver 25 or older (for practice) | A California-licensed driver 18 or older (Vehicle Code 12509) |
| Permit held before the drive test | At least 6 months | No 6-month hold |
| 50 hours of supervised practice | Required, 10 at night | Not required |
| Knowledge test | 80% to pass | 80% to pass |
Should an adult take a course anyway?
A course is optional for adults. Stallion's enrollment page describes the course it sells as a course for teens, so it is not meant for adults. What every adult needs is the knowledge in the handbook and real time behind the wheel. Study the California Driver's Handbook (opens in a new tab) section by section, then use our permit test study plan.
Adults who have never driven usually benefit most from a few professional lessons before practicing in traffic with a friend or family member. A licensed driving school's dual-control car lets an instructor stop the car if needed.
When can an adult take the drive test?
Adults do not have the 6-month permit hold that applies to teens, so the drive test can be scheduled once you feel ready and the DMV has an appointment. The permit itself can last up to 24 months from the application date under Vehicle Code 12509. Plan your practice so you test well before that.
