Who do I call about driver ed, the permit or the DMV?

Three organizations, each answering a different set of questions, with the phone numbers and pages to use.

Text or call Stallion for anything about the online course, including the DL 400C, and the California DMV for the permit, appointments, tests and records. Behind-the-wheel lessons are booked with a licensed driving school; questions about this website also go to Stallion.

Who answers which question?

Find your question in the left column and use the contact on the right. Each organization answers only its own part, so start with the right one.

How do I reach the California DMV?

Call DMV customer service at 1-800-777-0133, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The TTY line is 1-800-368-4327. The DMV's contact page (opens in a new tab) also offers a live chat.

  • Appointments: book online at dmv.ca.gov/make-an-appointment. The phone line's automated 24/7 service can also make an office appointment.
  • Records: request your own driving record online with a MyDMV account. The DMV charges $2 online and $5 by mail.
  • Driving schools: check a school's license on the Occupational License Lookup (opens in a new tab) by choosing the Driving School category.
  • Mail: driver's license inquiries go to Department of Motor Vehicles, PO Box 942890, Sacramento, CA 94290-0001.

What should I have ready before calling?

Have the details each office uses to find your file in front of you before you dial. The list below covers all three.

  • Stallion: the student's full name, the email used to enroll, the parent's name and the mailing address on the account.
  • Never send card numbers, Social Security numbers, passwords or ID documents by email or text; the enrollment page warns against it.
  • DMV: the handbook says to have your "driver's license or identification (ID) card number" ready, plus your MyDMV login for online services.
  • Driving school: the permit, the dates the student is free, and any glasses the permit requires.
From our instructorsIn our lessons at Stallion School of Driving the instructor checks the original permit at every pickup. Students bring the original permit, glasses if the permit lists them, and closed-toe shoes. Have those ready when you book with any school, so the first lesson is not lost to a missing document.
