Learning to drive in Alhambra: updated speed limits and traffic calming

Alhambra reset its speed limits after a citywide speed survey (opens in a new tab) of 88 street segments. Engineers measured the speed most drivers keep, then weighed crash history, road width and nearby school or senior zones. The City Council adopted the new limits in 2024. That means the limit you remember on a familiar street may have changed. Read every speed sign, and drive slower still near schools and senior centers.

Residents can also ask for traffic calming (opens in a new tab) on their block by sending a form signed by five other households. The city adopted these guidelines on May 12, 2025, and approved an update on April 27, 2026. Staff review crash history and the type of street before choosing any changes. The city's Local Roadway Safety Plan (opens in a new tab), finished in March 2023, maps places with higher crash risk. On a calmed street, ease off the gas and expect kids and parked cars near the curb.
