Learning to drive in Antioch: Highway 4 work zones and the Antioch Bridge
State Route 4 is Antioch's commuter freeway, and crews are still busy on it. In August 2026, Caltrans listed overnight closures on SR 4 (opens in a new tab) between Hillcrest Avenue and SR 160, including a closed Hillcrest on-ramp. Caltrans says the larger paving project is tentatively set to finish by summer 2027. Night closures shift lanes and send drivers onto detours. Slow down in cone zones, follow the orange detour signs, and keep a long following gap.
State Route 160 leaves town on the Antioch Bridge over the San Joaquin River. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (opens in a new tab) lists it at 1.8 miles long with one lane in each direction. During 2025 repairs, Caltrans ran one-way traffic behind a pilot car (opens in a new tab) at 25 mph. On a two-lane bridge, stay right of the center line and do not pass. If flaggers hold you, wait for the pilot car and match its speed.
