Learning to drive in Apple Valley: the Bear Valley Road bridge and safer central streets

Bear Valley Road crosses the Mojave River on a bridge built in 1963 and widened in 1988. The Town of Apple Valley is rebuilding the crossing (opens in a new tab), with construction from December 2025 to April 2028. The 1963 bridge will be removed and the 1988 bridge widened. During the work, traffic shifts to one side with two lanes open each way. The finished bridge adds shoulders, bike lanes and sidewalks. In a traffic shift, stay in your lane and keep your speed down.

In January 2026, the town won a $9.9 million federal Safe Streets for All grant (opens in a new tab). It will pay for protected bike and walking paths, crosswalks you can see from far off, and traffic calming. The work covers about 3.4 miles along Otoe Road, Thunderbird Road and Dale Evans Parkway. Parts of these roads are on the region's High Injury Network. When a street gets new curbs or narrower lanes, slow down and look for the new crossings. Yield to walkers, and give bikes plenty of room.
