Learning to drive in Folsom: a planned US 50 roundabout interchange and Historic District parking

US 50 is Folsom's freeway, and the city is planning a new interchange at Empire Ranch Road. The city's traffic page (opens in a new tab) says it would have a four-lane overpass with roundabouts where the ramps meet the road. It would connect Empire Ranch Road with new development south of the freeway and add bike and walking paths. The city is doing environmental analysis and early design. Freeway roundabouts mix fast and slow traffic, so slow to the posted speed before you enter one.

Parking is tight in Historic Folsom. The Sutter Streetscape project, finished in March 2011, added more than 40 street spaces. Plaza work that began in spring 2011 was set to remove all surface parking on the Railroad Block. The city offers a parking map for the district. It also updated its Local Road Safety Plan (opens in a new tab) in 2024 to focus on high-risk areas. Study the parking map before you go, and practice parallel parking on a quiet weekday morning.
