Learning to drive in Manteca: SR 120 ramp meters and a Murphy Road roundabout
State Route 120 runs through Manteca and links the Central Valley with the Bay Area. The McKinley Avenue interchange (opens in a new tab) was designed with ramp meters to ease congestion on SR 120. The plan also includes bike lanes on McKinley Avenue, and Caltrans listed completion for spring 2024. A ramp meter releases cars onto the freeway one by one. Wait at the stop bar on red, go on green, and use the rest of the ramp to reach freeway speed.
Near Manteca, SR 120 meets Murphy Road at a crossing where only Murphy Road has stop signs. Caltrans reports a higher than normal number of side-impact crashes there, caused by drivers who fail to yield. Its Murphy Road project (opens in a new tab) chose a roundabout, with completion targeted for summer 2027. Until it opens, highway traffic does not stop at this corner. From the stop sign, wait for a clear gap both ways before you cross or turn.
