Learning to drive in Montclair: the Central Avenue rail bridge and new bike lanes on Holt

Central Avenue crosses the railroad on a bridge built in 1967. The city's bridge replacement project (opens in a new tab) would add one lane in each direction, plus sidewalks and bike lanes. The tracks below carry Union Pacific trains along with Amtrak and Metrolink service. The city has not listed a completion year yet. Until the new bridge opens, keep a steady speed across it, and leave room to stop if traffic backs up.

Holt Boulevard is changing between Ramona Avenue and Benson Avenue. The city's Holt Boulevard project (opens in a new tab) repaves the road and its landscaped median. It also upgrades traffic signals and adds painted buffered bike lanes. This stretch is mostly commercial areas and business parks. When turning right, look in your mirror for bikes, and enter the bike lane only where the line is dashed.
