Learning to drive in Orange: freeway connectors and the Plaza traffic circle

Several freeways meet near Orange, so new drivers face many connectors. On I-5, Caltrans notes direct connectors to other freeways (opens in a new tab), including SR 55, SR 91 and the SR 22/SR 57 junction. On SR 241, Caltrans plans repairs from the 2020 Silverado Fire (opens in a new tab) in Orange and Irvine. It lists fall 2026 as the start of construction. Get into the lane for your connector well before the split. Never cut across the painted area between ramps.

Old Towne Orange is built around the Plaza, a traffic circle with parking along its edge. Since February 9, 2026, the city has charged for parking near the Plaza (opens in a new tab) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day. Spots on Plaza Circle have a 2-hour limit. Watch for cars stopping to park or backing out. In the circle, yield to traffic already in it and travel counterclockwise. Signal before your exit, and watch for people crossing.
