Learning to drive in Redlands: SR 38 work zones and bike boxes

State Route 38 in Redlands is a work zone right now. Caltrans started a $10.4 million pavement and safety project (opens in a new tab) there in August 2026. Work sites include Lugonia Avenue, Orange Street to Pearl Avenue, and the stretch from Interstate 10 to Occidental Drive. The project brings new traffic signals, 73 upgraded curb ramps and bike lanes. Daytime work runs Monday through Friday. Expect lane closures and detours, slow down, and follow the posted signs.

Redlands' bike network includes bike boxes (opens in a new tab), which place riders ahead of cars at an intersection so drivers can see them. The city also has off-street Class I paths, such as the Orange Blossom Trail, and striped Class II bike lanes. At a red light, stop behind the bike box, not inside it. When the light turns green, let the cyclists ahead of you go first. Look to your right before you turn.
