Learning to drive in San Dimas: truck routes and the San Dimas Avenue loop

San Dimas names the streets that vehicles over 3 tons may use (traffic services (opens in a new tab)). The City Council approved that list of truck routes on January 24, 2023. It includes Foothill Boulevard, Arrow Highway, Covina Boulevard, Lone Hill Avenue and parts of San Dimas Avenue. So expect large trucks on these streets, often making wide turns. Keep clear of the areas a trucker cannot see, and never pull up beside a truck turning right.

The San Dimas Avenue Loop was one of the largest and most complex city projects in recent years (completed projects (opens in a new tab)). Crews fixed a failed slope with 14-foot retaining walls, moved street lights and added guardrails. They also added 4,400 linear feet of striped Class II bike lanes. Citywide, speed limits come from an Engineering and Traffic Survey that the City Council adopts by ordinance. On curving roads with new bike lanes, stay inside your lane and leave riders plenty of room.
