Learning to drive in Santa Barbara: Cliff Drive changes and upper State Street crossings
Cliff Drive is set to change shape. The city's Cliff Drive Vision Zero Project (opens in a new tab) removes extra travel lanes and adds a separated path for people of all ages. The path will link Castillo Street and Arroyo Burro County Park. It also adds 14 new crosswalks and four new traffic signals. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, after water main work that started in October 2025. Watch for flashing beacons, and yield to anyone stepping off the curb.
Upper State Street, between Mission Street and Alamar Avenue, carries about 8,500 vehicles a day. The city counted 27 collisions there from 2020 to 2024. That puts it in the top 5 percent of its High Injury Network (opens in a new tab). The city is seeking grant money for high-visibility crosswalks, flashing beacons and better lighting. On a street like this, scan both sidewalks as you drive. After dark, slow down near crosswalks, because people on foot are harder to see.
