Learning to drive in Stockton: the I-5 viaduct, SR 4 ramp meters and tule fog
Interstate 5 through Stockton is headed for a long rebuild. Caltrans plans to replace the Stockton Channel Viaduct (opens in a new tab), the pair of Interstate 5 bridges over the channel. It schedules widening of the Buena Vista overpass for fall 2027 to spring 2028. The southbound bridge follows from 2028 to 2032, and the northbound bridge runs until fall 2035. On State Route 4, Caltrans has put meters on the on-ramps (opens in a new tab) between I-5 and SR 99. Learn work-zone signs now, and wait for the green light at each meter before you merge.
Valley weather is the other big lesson. Caltrans says tule fog often covers the Central Valley (opens in a new tab) from fall through early spring, after rain soaks the soil. Fog-prone highways have reflective dots on the right shoulder that count down to an exit: three, then two, then one. The first set appears 2,100 feet before the ramp. Slow down early, use low beams, and never stop on the shoulder. Count the dots so a foggy exit does not surprise you.
