Driving in Amador County: State Route 88 from Jackson toward Carson Pass

State Route 88 is the main climb in Amador County, starting at Jackson and passing Pine Grove and Pioneer. Caltrans describes rough pavement and guardrail below current standards on this stretch. Its Jackson to Pioneer project (opens in a new tab) would repave the road, replace 31 culverts and add about 2,300 feet of bike lanes. The project is still in its environmental phase, with completion targeted for summer 2032. Until then, slow down before each bend on SR 88. Keep both hands on the wheel and watch the shoulder for cyclists.

In Pine Grove, the highway turns into a town street with a school and a town hall. The Pine Grove project (opens in a new tab) proposes a signal at Volcano Road, a crossing beacon near Town Hall, and sidewalks toward the school. Higher up, the Carson area project (opens in a new tab) plans message signs, cameras and road weather stations on SR 88 and SR 89. Severe weather often disrupts travel there. Caltrans targets spring 2027 for that work. Before a winter drive toward Kirkwood, check road reports and turn back if conditions exceed your skills.
