Learning to drive in Anaheim: I-5 carpool ramps and a one-way promenade

Anaheim's part of Interstate 5 has ramps that lead straight into the carpool lanes. Caltrans lists direct access ramps (opens in a new tab) at Disney Way, Disneyland Drive and Gene Autry Way. Each direction has one or more HOV lanes, and Caltrans is studying express lanes for this stretch. Caltrans and OCTA have also proposed widening northbound SR 57 (opens in a new tab) between Orangewood Avenue and Katella Avenue. Before you use a carpool lane, read the sign for how many riders it requires. Enter and leave it only where the stripes allow.

Some Anaheim streets now put people on foot and on bikes first. Near La Palma Park, the city and Caltrans turned a two-way road into the one-way North La Palma Parkway Promenade (opens in a new tab). It has 10 high-visibility crosswalks, wider walkways and 2,050 feet of bike corridors. A street like this asks drivers to move slowly. Read the one-way signs before you turn in. Stop for anyone in a crosswalk, and scan both curbs as you roll through.
