Learning to drive in Garden Grove: SR 22 connectors and a Caltrans study
State Route 22, the Garden Grove Freeway, runs across the city toward I-5 and SR 57. In 2019, Caltrans began a $20 million safety project (opens in a new tab) on SR 22. It ran from Brookhurst Street to the horseshoe connector for northbound I-5 and SR 57. It widened the connector and moved concrete barriers, with an end date set for summer 2021. In 2021 the state also funded safety lighting and median barrier work (opens in a new tab) on SR 22. Connectors can curve tightly, so slow down before you enter one and keep a steady speed.
Garden Grove is part of a Caltrans Reconnecting Our Communities study (opens in a new tab). It looks at places where highways, ramps and major roads divide neighborhoods. The goal is safer trips for people walking, biking and riding transit. Caltrans lists a final study report for fall 2026. Near freeway ramps, people on foot may cross while drivers speed up or slow down. Look for walkers before you turn onto a ramp, and keep your speed low until you merge.
