Teens in Atwater take the same 30-hour online driver education course as everywhere in California, then the permit test at a DMV office. The nearest DMV field office is the Merced office at 1313 W 12th Street, Merced, 5.3 to 7.9 miles in a straight line from Atwater's public high schools.
Where do Atwater teens take the permit and drive tests?
The Los Banos office is open only part of the week, so check the days before you go. None of California's 162 permit-testing DMV offices lists weekend hours, so plan a school-day visit. Book an appointment on the DMV appointments page (opens in a new tab), and arrive well before 4:30 p.m.: knowledge tests are not given after that. What to bring is on our permit visit checklist.

Learning to drive in Atwater: a new signal by Highway 99 and a rail crossing
Near the southbound Highway 99 ramps, Atwater switched on a new traffic signal at Bell Lane (opens in a new tab) and a commercial driveway. On December 17, 2024, it changed from flashing red to normal red, yellow and green. The city asked drivers to use care entering the intersection. A flashing red light works like a stop sign, so the change mattered. When a signal changes how it works, some drivers may not notice. Obey the new lights, and be ready for others who make mistakes.
Bellevue Road crosses the BNSF railroad in Atwater. In September 2024, the city closed that crossing (opens in a new tab) for railroad repairs and set up detours. Earlier that year, crews began rebuilding Fruitland Avenue (opens in a new tab) from Orchard Park Avenue to Capitola Avenue, with flaggers directing traffic. Look and listen for trains at every crossing. Cross only when the other side has space for your car, so you never end up stopped on the rails.
