Learning to drive in Turlock: the Geer Road rebuild and a rail crossing on Golden State

Geer Road is one of Turlock's main streets, and it is becoming a long work zone. In August 2026, the City Council approved a contract to rebuild it, the city announced (opens in a new tab). The work runs from North Golden State Boulevard to Taylor Road in three phases. The finished road will have buffered bike lanes, upgraded traffic signals and flashing beacons at some crosswalks. Through the work zone, slow down, follow the cones and expect lane shifts. Stop for anyone waiting at a beacon crossing.

Railroad tracks cross Golden State Boulevard near Golf Road. In fall 2025, the nearby intersections were set to close (opens in a new tab) for about a month while Union Pacific replaced the crossing panels. A rail crossing is one place a driver must never stop. Before you cross, make sure there is space for your entire car past the tracks. If the lights flash or the gates drop, stop behind the line and wait.
