Driving in Stanislaus County: SR 99 trucks and risky rural left turns

State Route 99 carries heavy truck traffic through Stanislaus County. Near Ceres, the Mitchell Road and Service Road project (opens in a new tab) would build a diverging diamond interchange at Service Road. In this design, traffic briefly crosses to the opposite side of the road between the ramps. Caltrans lists the completion date as to be determined. Learn the layout with a parent before you drive it alone. Follow the lane arrows and signals closely, and give trucks extra room on ramps.

Away from the freeway, left turns on rural highways cause trouble. On SR 120 at Wamble Road, the lack of a left-turn lane leads to rear-end crashes. The Wamble Road project (opens in a new tab) would add one. In Modesto, McHenry Avenue (SR 108) at Coralwood Road has more broadside crashes than average from drivers failing to yield. A signal is planned there, with completion targeted for October 2028 (SR 108 project (opens in a new tab)). While waiting to turn left, keep your wheels straight and check your mirror for traffic behind you.
