Learning to drive in Banning: closing the Sun Lakes Boulevard gap

The city says Sun Lakes Boulevard has been missing a piece for decades. The Sun Lakes Boulevard Extension Project (opens in a new tab) will connect Highland Springs Avenue and Sunset Avenue without crossing or getting on the freeway. The new road adds bike lanes and sidewalks. Clearing paused in June 2026 because birds were nesting in the creek areas, then restarted in July after they left. The city's target for completion is summer 2027. Until then, watch for trucks entering the road near the work, and keep your speed down beside the site.

Downtown Banning treats Ramsey Street as its main street. The city's Downtown Revitalization and Complete Streets Plan (opens in a new tab) covers about a half mile between 8th Street and Martin Street. It also includes Hays Street and Livingston Street. The plan aims to make travel safe for people walking, biking, riding transit and driving. Downtown, scan the curbs for people about to cross, and check for bikes before you open a parked car's door.
