Driving in Riverside County: Ortega Highway and the long I-10 drive east
Two Riverside County state routes are busy work zones right now. Near Lake Elsinore, State Route 74, the Ortega Highway, is a narrow two-lane road with little shoulder. Caltrans started a $96.1 million widening and safety project (opens in a new tab) there in 2026, with nightly flagging and some 55-hour weekend closures. On State Route 243 between Banning and Idyllwild, paving work (opens in a new tab) can mean flagger waits of up to 20 minutes. Caltrans expects it to finish by winter 2026. On these roads, slow down before curves, stay to the right, and never pass across a solid yellow line.
Interstate 10 east of Indio is a long drive with fewer places to stop right now. Both Cactus City rest areas (opens in a new tab), between Indio and Chiriaco Summit, are closed for rebuilding, with work expected to end by spring 2027. Near Blythe, a $241 million pavement project (opens in a new tab) has used lane crossovers, ramp closures and lower speed limits. It is expected to finish by winter 2026. Plan long I-10 drives with a parent in the car. Start with a full tank and water, take breaks before you feel tired, and obey reduced work-zone limits.
