Learning to drive in Palm Desert: new signals, El Paseo crossings and summer heat

Palm Desert's capital improvement plan (opens in a new tab) funds several changes drivers will notice. It includes new traffic signals at Mesa View Drive and Highway 74 and at Monterey and Mag Falls. It also funds an El Paseo street rehabilitation with a mid-block crossing. A CV Link connector on Hovley is in the plan too. New signals and mid-block crossings show up where drivers are used to rolling through. Slow down near them, and stop for anyone in the crosswalk.

Desert heat matters even when your car is parked. A parked car can get dangerously hot fast, even on mild days in the 70s, the National Weather Service (opens in a new tab) warns. Opening the windows slightly does not help much. Never leave a child or a pet in a parked car, even for a minute. Touch seat belts and car seats before buckling up, since they can get very hot. Carry water on every desert drive.
