Learning to drive in Indio: the Avenue 44 bridge and a rebuilt downtown

For years, Avenue 44 dipped through the Coachella Valley Storm Water Channel at street level. Storms damaged it many times, and Tropical Storm Hilary washed it out on August 19, 2023. The city is building a $35 million all-weather bridge (opens in a new tab) there, between Palo Verde Street and Aztec Street. The road has been closed since August 2023, with detours using Avenue 45 and Golf Center Parkway. Completion was expected by summer 2026. Follow posted detours, even when a map app suggests the closed road.

Downtown streets are being rebuilt to drain better. The city's Downtown Drainage Project (opens in a new tab) adds storm drains, rain gardens and curb extensions. They go on Requa Avenue, Oasis Street, Jackson Street and Smurr Street. It also adds a raised crosswalk on Miles Avenue and new medians on Oasis Street. The work was scheduled from June 2024 to August 2025. Curb extensions narrow the street at corners, so slow down there and roll gently over a raised crosswalk.
