Learning to drive in Coachella: Avenue 50 plans and Avenue 53 roundabout work

Avenue 50 is the focus of big plans in Coachella. The city's Avenue 50 page (opens in a new tab) posts an environmental study for a new interchange where Avenue 50 meets State Route 86. This summer the city also sought bids for an Avenue 50 bridge (opens in a new tab), with bids due September 3, 2026. Expect work zones along this road in the years ahead. In any work zone, slow down early, merge where the signs tell you, and watch for workers near the lanes.

Coachella also plans work on a roundabout on Avenue 53. In September 2026, the city re-advertised its Avenue 53 tot lot and roundabout project (opens in a new tab), with bids due October 14, 2026. The city's capital projects page (opens in a new tab) shows earlier traffic work as well. One project timed traffic lights to work together across the city. The Avenue 52 grade separation was done in 2015. In any roundabout, slow down, yield to cars already circling, and signal as you leave.
