Learning to drive in Hemet: SR 74 paving and a longer repave to the east

State Route 74 links Menifee and Hemet, and Caltrans continues work on a $17.9 million rehabilitation project (opens in a new tab) along it. Crews are laying rubberized asphalt and adding concrete barriers, better crosswalks and synchronized signals. On weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., expect alternating lane and shoulder closures. The project is expected to be done by winter 2026. Synchronized signals reward a steady speed. Drive at the limit, and never race to beat a yellow light.

Caltrans also plans to repave about 50.6 miles of SR 74 (opens in a new tab) from Fairview Avenue near Hemet east toward Palm Desert. The plan replaces culverts, guardrails and signs and adds sidewalks and bus pads. Public comments on the environmental study closed on August 17, 2026. Plan any long drive on SR 74 with a parent. Start with a full tank, and slow down for curves and roadside work.
