Learning to drive in Palm Springs: Whitewater Wash crossings and blowing sand

Three Palm Springs roads cross the Whitewater Wash: Indian Canyon Drive, Gene Autry Trail and Vista Chino. After storms, the city says runoff can flow across them (opens in a new tab). In September 2022, water was still running weeks after the rain. Later, winds of 30 to 45 mph blow fine, powdery sand left by floods onto the pavement. The city's street closure page (opens in a new tab) says these low stretches often close in bad weather and high winds. Never drive into moving water or drifted sand, and take another route when a closure is posted.

Two other projects affect how you get around town. Since March 2, South Palm Canyon Drive has used a new western bridge span over Tahquitz Creek, one lane each way. Caltrans also planned pavement work on Highway 111 from Interstate 10 to 0.4 miles west of Tramway Road. That work was set to begin in September 2026 and finish by the end of 2026. Expect single lane closures on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. In a narrowed work zone, hold a steady speed, stay in your lane and leave extra space ahead.
