Learning to drive in Temecula: I-15 auxiliary lanes and French Valley Parkway
Interstate 15 through Temecula is busy, and Caltrans has been adding auxiliary lanes. The $33.8 million project (opens in a new tab) connects ramps between Rancho California Road, Winchester Road and Temecula Parkway. Permanent striping is in, but night work on lanes and ramps may continue through fall 2026. An auxiliary lane links an on-ramp to the next off-ramp. If you are in one, expect it to end at the exit. Move into a through lane early if you are staying on the freeway.
Between Winchester Road and the I-215 junction, the city is building the French Valley Parkway interchange (opens in a new tab) in phases. The city says merging across 4 to 5 lanes there once backed traffic up 3 to 12 miles into San Diego County. A barrier and bridge that opened in April 2025 now split traffic by destination. The city also plans a roundabout at De Portola Road and Jedediah Smith Road (opens in a new tab), with design due in late 2026. In a roundabout, yield to cars already inside and drive counterclockwise.
