Learning to drive in Corona: I-15 and SR 91 work zones
Interstate 15 and State Route 91 both cross Corona, and each has a project. On southbound I-15, Caltrans plans a $6 million safety project (opens in a new tab) adding a 12-foot deceleration lane north of the Ontario Avenue exit. It cites congestion-related crashes there and expects work to start in late 2026. Caltrans and RCTC have also proposed to extend the I-15 Express Lanes (opens in a new tab) 15.8 miles south from El Cerrito Road to Lake Elsinore. Use a deceleration lane to slow down for your exit. Do not brake hard in the main lanes.
State Route 91 in Corona has its own work zone. Near Green River Drive, crews are replacing culverts under SR 91 (opens in a new tab) in a $12.6 million project that also improves a wildlife crossing. Caltrans expects to finish by fall 2027. It warns that 55-hour closures of lanes and local ramps may be needed. Work trucks will be moving in and out of the zone. Check for closures before you leave, and keep enough space to stop behind a slow truck.
The path to a license in Corona
- Finish the online driver education course (30 hours, $49.95 with Traffic Tutors) and wait for the mailed DL 400C.
- At 15½, apply for the permit at the Norco DMV office or any other, with the DL 400C and a parent's signature.
- Book the first behind-the-wheel lesson; the instructor validates the permit.
- Practice 50 hours with a licensed driver 25 or older, 10 at night, while finishing the 6 training hours.
- After 6 months with the permit and at 16 or older, take the drive test. Dates: age date tool.
