Learning to drive in Brawley: Best Avenue closures and desert dust storms
Brawley scheduled repairs on Best Avenue between Main Street and Jones Street. The Best Avenue Street Improvements Project (opens in a new tab) was set to start September 21, 2026, with paving through October 22. During partial closures, one lane was to stay open in each direction. Full closures were planned for October 16 and for October 21 and 22, with detours for through traffic. The city calls these dates tentative. Check city notices before you leave, and follow detour signs even when the closed street is your usual way.
Summer storms bring another hazard to desert towns like Brawley. Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Phoenix warn about dust storms (opens in a new tab). One can hit suddenly and cut visibility to a quarter mile or less. Their advice is to get your car well off the road and stop. Then switch off all lights and set the parking brake. Keep your foot off the brake pedal, since drivers behind may follow your taillights.
