Where do Calexico teens take the permit and drive tests?
The Blythe office is open only part of the week, so check the days before you go. None of California's 162 permit-testing DMV offices lists weekend hours, so plan a school-day visit. Book an appointment on the DMV appointments page (opens in a new tab), and arrive well before 4:30 p.m.: knowledge tests are not given after that. What to bring is on our permit visit checklist.

Learning to drive in Calexico: port of entry traffic and speed humps
Work at Calexico's pedestrian border crossing has closed a nearby street. Starting August 10, 2026, the city closed a block of 1st Street from Paulin Avenue to Rockwood Avenue (opens in a new tab). The closure allows sewer work at the Pedestrian West Land Port of Entry and was expected to last about four months. The city asked drivers and walkers to take care and allow extra travel time. Near the crossing, drive slowly, expect people between cars, and follow posted detours instead of a map app.
Calexico residents can ask the city for speed humps on their streets. The city's street system page (opens in a new tab) links to the request process. Under the speed hump policy (opens in a new tab), humps go only on residential streets, never on main roads or emergency routes. They are wider and gentler than the bumps in parking lots, so cars can cross them at a reasonable speed. The policy notes that some drivers detour to other streets to avoid them. Slow down before each hump, cross it straight, and stay alert on side streets.
