Learning to drive in Burbank: weekend closures on I-5

Interstate 5 runs through Burbank, and Caltrans is replacing damaged pavement (opens in a new tab) between the Empire Avenue and Cohasset Street undercrossings. The project spans about one mile and replaces about 3.72 lane miles. Caltrans lists work from winter 2025/2026 through summer 2027. Ramps at Burbank Boulevard, Buena Vista Street and Hollywood Way may close during the work. Learn more than one route to the freeway, and leave early when signs warn of closures.

Some closures last a whole weekend. In March 2026, Caltrans cut southbound I-5 to two lanes (opens in a new tab) for 55 hours between Cohasset Street and Empire Avenue. On two nights, the freeway was set to close fully between Hollywood Way and Empire Avenue for restriping. It was the fifth of six planned 55-hour closures. In a lane reduction, merge where the signs say, hold your speed steady, and keep both hands on the wheel.
