Learning to drive in Glendale: speed cameras and San Fernando Road
Glendale is starting to enforce speed limits with cameras. Under a state pilot law, the city's Speed Safety Program (opens in a new tab) planned nine camera sites. It chose them using its Local Road Safety Plan, speeding citations and collision data. The schedule called for cameras to switch on in mid-2026. For the first 60 days, speeders get warning notices, and citations follow after that. Drive at the posted limit everywhere, so a camera never changes how you drive.
San Fernando Road calls for a different skill. Caltrans says the road is used as a bypass to I-5 and links Glendale with Burbank and Atwater Village. A redesign of 1.6 miles (opens in a new tab) added bike lanes, curb bulb-outs, median islands and painted art crosswalks. At the SR 2/I-5 interchange (opens in a new tab), two connectors are down to one lane for bridge work. Caltrans expects that work to last until winter 2026/2027. Before a right turn across a bike lane, signal, check your mirror and shoulder, and enter it only when it is clear.
