Driving in Butte County: valley highways and county roads
State highways tie Butte County's towns together. Each town changes the pace. In Gridley, Caltrans lists State Route 99 work (opens in a new tab) starting at West Liberty Road, with new sidewalks and a highway camera at East Gridley Road. In Oroville, State Route 162 (opens in a new tab) runs from the Feather River Bridge to Foothill Boulevard and meets an off-ramp of State Route 70. Plan a loop that passes through both towns, so a learner feels highway speed drop to town streets with crosswalks.
No single map shows every closure here. The county's road conditions page (opens in a new tab) covers county-maintained roads only, marking closures in red and caution areas in yellow. It leaves out roads affected by an active incident and sends residents to CAL FIRE and other incident agencies for those. Before a long practice drive on county roads, check the county map and the incident updates together, and pick another route if either shows a problem.
