Driving in Calaveras County: State Route 4 and a new roundabout on SR 49
State Route 4 links Copperopolis and Angels Camp, and Caltrans wants that drive to be safer and less delayed. The Wagon Trail Realignment (opens in a new tab) would put part of SR 4 on a new path west of its junction with SR 49. Caltrans targets completion in summer 2030. A separate repaving project (opens in a new tab) near Copperopolis is aimed at winter 2028. Until then, drive the current road with care. Leave a long gap behind slow vehicles, and never pass across a solid yellow line.
In Mokelumne Hill, SR 26 meets SR 49 at a corner with a pattern of broadside crashes. Caltrans says the cause is drivers who fail to yield. Its Highway 26/49 project (opens in a new tab) is building a roundabout there, and completion is targeted for winter 2027. Learn roundabout rules before this one opens. Slow down on the approach and yield to cars already circling. Choose your exit before you enter, and signal as you leave.
