Learning to drive in Chula Vista: I-805 merge lanes and smart signals

Interstate 805 through Chula Vista is getting extra room for merging. Caltrans' South Bridge Safety and Sound Walls project (opens in a new tab) adds northbound auxiliary lanes on I-805 between Naples Street and Telegraph Canyon Road. These lanes give drivers space to speed up and slow down. Caltrans estimated completion by summer 2026. In July 2026, the SR 54 ramp to southbound I-805 and part of Telegraph Canyon Road were set for overnight closures (opens in a new tab). In an auxiliary lane, match freeway speed before you merge, and never cut across several lanes to exit.

On city streets, Chula Vista operates more than 300 traffic signals from its own Traffic Management Center (opens in a new tab). The city has been adding adaptive signal controls (opens in a new tab) that adjust green and red times to real-time traffic. The first set was planned for 29 intersections on Telegraph Canyon Road and H Street in 2018. Because green times can change, do not try to predict the light. Watch it, and stop for a yellow when you can do so safely.
