Learning to drive in Imperial Beach: a slimmer 9th Street and a moved stop sign
Imperial Beach cut 9th Street from four lanes to three south of Calla Avenue (9th Street project (opens in a new tab)). The project added buffered green bike lanes, curb pop-outs and crosswalks with rectangular rapid flashing beacons. The four-way stop moved from Donax Avenue to Elm Street, and Donax is now a two-way stop. Engineers found that the old stop backed traffic up to the Palm Avenue signal. Drive a changed street as if it were new to you, and read every stop sign.
Next, the city is planning changes to Palm Avenue from Georgia Street to Rainbow Drive (Palm Avenue Master Plan (opens in a new tab)). The goal is safer choices for walking, biking, transit and driving. Design is expected to be done in 2027, with construction to be scheduled later. The bollards at 9th Street and Palm Avenue will be reviewed again during that work. Near bollards and bike lanes, slow down and look for cyclists before every right turn.
