Driving in Colusa County: Salt Creek Canyon curves and long I-5 runs

State Route 20 runs west from Interstate 5 through Salt Creek Canyon, and its curves are a known danger. A Caltrans road safety audit counted 23 crashes in the Salt Creek Canyon segment (opens in a new tab), and four people died. Some curves and hills block the view ahead, and the shoulders are too narrow for a stalled car. Caltrans plans wider shoulders and rumble strips, with construction scheduled from June 2029 to fall 2030. Until then, slow down before blind curves and hilltops. Never pass across a solid yellow line.

Interstate 5 also crosses Colusa County, and long drives on it can wear you out. Caltrans is rebuilding the northbound Maxwell rest area (opens in a new tab), about 2.5 miles south of Maxwell, with work scheduled through October 2028. In winter, the weather service says thick tule fog (opens in a new tab) often forms at night in the Central Valley between late October and February. On long trips, plan rest stops and switch drivers if you feel sleepy. In fog, slow down, use low beams and leave extra space.
