Learning to drive in Concord: SR 242 and new crosswalk beacons
State Route 242 is a short freeway in Concord that meets Interstate 680. In 2021, Caltrans replaced worn concrete on northbound SR 242 (opens in a new tab), about 3,500 linear feet in two lanes. During weekend closures, detours used Monument Boulevard, Willow Pass Road and Concord Avenue. Drivers headed east were sent via I-680 to SR 4. Caltrans warned of delays on those streets during the work. Try the I-680 and SR 242 connector at a quiet hour, and check your blind spot before each lane change.
Concord has also upgraded crossings on Willow Pass Road. The city's Willow Pass Road project (opens in a new tab) repaved the road between Galindo Street and Landana Drive. It added rectangular rapid flashing beacons at Ashdale Drive and an upgraded HAWK signal at San Vicente Drive. When a HAWK lights up, slow for the yellow and come to a full stop on solid red. On flashing red, stop first and go once the walker has finished crossing.
The path to a license in Concord
- Finish the online driver education course (30 hours, $49.95 with Traffic Tutors) and wait for the mailed DL 400C.
- At 15½, apply for the permit at the Concord DMV office or any other, with the DL 400C and a parent's signature.
- Book the first behind-the-wheel lesson; the instructor validates the permit.
- Practice 50 hours with a licensed driver 25 or older, 10 at night, while finishing the 6 training hours.
