Learning to drive in Pleasant Hill: I-680 settlement repairs and push-button flashing stop signs
Pleasant Hill sits beside I-680, and part of the southbound freeway sank after storms. Caltrans scheduled emergency settlement repairs (opens in a new tab) just south of Willow Pass Road, ahead of the Monument Boulevard exit. Storm damage had caused sunken pavement, eroded slopes and broken drainage. Overnight closures were set for Monday through Saturday from July 20, 2026, with September 4 as a tentative end. The Willow Pass Road on-ramp to southbound I-680 closed during those hours. On patched pavement, hold the wheel firmly with both hands and expect a bumpy, uneven surface.
Around town, Pleasant Hill has added flashing stop signs at busy corners. Its 2023 intersection and crosswalk project (opens in a new tab) upgraded seven intersections for people on foot. The work added stop signs and beacons that flash when a walker presses the button, plus speed humps and better crosswalks. Morello Avenue at Viking Drive also became an all-way stop. When a stop sign starts flashing, someone is about to cross, so come to a full stop and scan both crosswalks.
