Learning to drive in Danville: the El Cerro on-ramp and signals that see bikes

Many Danville drivers reach southbound I-680 from El Cerro Boulevard, and that ramp is closing again for sound wall work. For that work, Caltrans set an overnight full closure (opens in a new tab) from 8 p.m. Friday, October 9, to 8 a.m. Saturday, October 10, 2026. A nearby freeway lane closes too, so drivers are sent to the Stone Valley or Sycamore Valley on-ramps. Before a night drive, check for ramp closures, and leave room for drivers who merge late around the cones.

Danville is a busy cycling town, and its signals are built for riders. Video cameras now detect bikes (opens in a new tab) at seven intersections, including Diablo Road at Camino Tassajara and Danville Boulevard at El Cerro Boulevard. A small blue light on the signal pole tells a rider the camera has seen them. The town's e-bike and e-scooter rules (opens in a new tab) add that scooter riders need a license or learner's permit. At these lights, give riders room when the light turns green, and do not crowd them as they pull away.
