Learning to drive in San Ramon: I-680 night work and Iron Horse Trail crossings
Interstate 680 is San Ramon's freeway, and a long repair job is underway on it. In March 2026, Caltrans began rehabilitating about 7 miles of I-680 (opens in a new tab) between Alcosta Boulevard and Diablo Valley Road. Crews are replacing damaged concrete slabs and resurfacing the pavement. Work is expected to wrap up in spring 2028. Expect nightly lane closures and shifting traffic patterns from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weeknights. At night in a work zone, ease off the gas, stay between the cones, and watch for workers near your lane.
San Ramon also has a busy trail that crosses its main roads. The city is planning an Iron Horse Trail bridge over Crow Canyon Road (opens in a new tab) for bicycles and pedestrians. Its design work is scheduled through June 2028. School trips add traffic too. The TRAFFIX program (opens in a new tab) runs a fleet of 24 school buses to local high, middle and elementary schools. Near trail crossings and school zones, ease off and expect walkers and riders to step out.
