Driving in Del Norte County: landslide coast and tight inland curves
U.S. 101 is the lifeline of Del Norte County, and one stretch of it keeps sliding. Caltrans says landslides at Last Chance Grade (opens in a new tab) have caused repairs, delays and emergency closures for decades. If a slide closed the road for a long time, drivers could face an eight-hour detour through Oregon. Caltrans has moved a 6,000-foot bypass tunnel into design and expects to start building in 2031. The money for construction is not secured yet. Check QuickMap before every coast trip, and slow down for Roosevelt elk (opens in a new tab) near Crescent Beach.
Inland, U.S. 199 heads northeast from Crescent City through tight curves. Caltrans is fixing seven trouble spots on U.S. 199 and Route 197 (opens in a new tab), including a rocky pinch point called the Narrows. The project page says long trucks can swing over the center line on these curves, and drivers have little time to react. Caltrans expects one-way traffic control through the end of 2029. Full four-hour closures on Tuesday to Thursday middays could start no earlier than January 2027. Practice this road in daylight with a parent, brake before each curve, and keep your tires inside your lane.
