Driving in El Dorado County: US 50 from Placerville to Lake Tahoe
U.S. Highway 50 is the main road through El Dorado County. It passes Placerville and Camino, climbs past Pollock Pines and Strawberry, and reaches South Lake Tahoe. At 5 Mile Road, Caltrans plans a new acceleration lane so drivers can merge more safely onto westbound US 50. The Placerville/Camino project (opens in a new tab) lists construction from June 2026 to September 2028. Practice merges here with a parent: use the full ramp to match speed, signal early, and check your blind spot.
Higher on the route, a repaving project (opens in a new tab) between Icehouse Road and Strawberry is scheduled from June 2026 to December 2028. South Lake Tahoe brings a different risk: people on bikes and on foot. Caltrans found that most bike crashes on US 50 between the "Y" at State Route 89 and Pioneer Trail happened at night. Its safety project (opens in a new tab) adds lighting, four flashing crosswalk signals and a signal at Johnson Boulevard. After dark, slow down near crosswalks and give cyclists plenty of room.
