Learning to drive in El Monte: I-10 bridge repairs and Valley Boulevard

Interstate 10 crosses El Monte, and Caltrans has been repairing its bridges (opens in a new tab) between Baldwin Avenue and Peck Road. The work removes damaged sections, seals joints and strengthens bridge decks. One weekend in September 2025, all HOV lanes and two other lanes closed in each direction. Caltrans expected the project to wrap up by spring 2026. Before a weekend drive, check Caltrans QuickMap for closures and plan a backup on-ramp.

Away from the freeway lanes, El Monte is studying its busy boulevards. A new 18-foot city gateway monument (opens in a new tab) now marks Peck Road and Valley Boulevard, beside I-10. The city is also running a complete streets study (opens in a new tab) of Valley Boulevard and Main Street. It will develop four options for Valley and two for Main to make travel safer for everyone. On busy boulevards, cover the brake near bus stops and driveways, and expect walkers at every corner.
