Learning to drive in Fremont: Mission Boulevard and the I-680 corridor
In Fremont, Mission Boulevard is a state highway that behaves like a city street. The city's safety data page (opens in a new tab) notes that State Routes 238 and 262 run about 10 miles along Mission. Fremont counted 87 fatal crashes from 2014 through 2025. In 2025, deaths dropped from 12 to 7 while police traffic stops climbed. Mission mixes fast traffic with driveways, signals and people walking. Hold the posted limit, and keep a foot near the brake by busy driveways and bus stops.
Interstate 680 is Fremont's other big corridor, with several Caltrans projects. Its I-680 corridor plan (opens in a new tab) adds about 9 miles of northbound express lane from Grimmer Boulevard to Route 84. The southbound express lane will switch to continuous access. An auxiliary lane will link the Washington Boulevard on-ramp to the Route 238 exit. Study express lane rules with a parent first. Change lanes only across a broken line, never over a double solid stripe.
