Driving in Glenn County: railroad crossings and valley fog

In Willows and Orland, state highways run through town and cross railroad tracks. On State Route 32 between Orland and Hamilton City, Caltrans schedules repaving and curb ramp upgrades (opens in a new tab) from December 2027 to December 2028. That project also fills a sidewalk gap at the Orland track crossing. In Willows, plans for State Route 162 include new signal equipment near railroad crossings (opens in a new tab), with construction listed for 2031. At every crossing, look both ways and listen for a train. Never stop on the tracks, and wait until your whole car fits on the far side.

Interstate 5 also crosses Glenn County. Caltrans plans to rebuild I-5 pavement near Orland (opens in a new tab) up to the Tehama County line, with work scheduled from March to July 2029. Fog is another winter hazard on valley roads. In fog, the weather service says to use low beams, not high beams (opens in a new tab) and to watch the lane lines. If you can barely see, turn on your hazard lights and pull completely off the road into a safe spot.
