Learning to drive in Hercules: where Interstate 80 meets Highway 4

Hercules is where Interstate 80 and State Highway 4 come together. The city's transportation page (opens in a new tab) says I-80 here has a peak-hour carpool lane that needs three people in the car. Highway 4 heads east toward Martinez and Concord and links to I-680. Two rail lines also pass through town, one along the bay shore and one beside San Pablo Avenue. Use the carpool lane only during its posted hours, and only with the number of riders the sign requires.

The ramp between those two freeways sometimes closes for upkeep. For Saturday, October 3, 2026, Caltrans scheduled a daytime closure of the connector (opens in a new tab) from eastbound I-80 to eastbound SR 4. Crews needed it for electrical and maintenance work. The detour sent drivers off at the Cummings Skyway exit and onto Highway 4 from there. Message signs warned drivers ahead of time. If a sign says a connector is closed, move to the exit lane early rather than cutting across late.
