Learning to drive in Richmond: I-80 night driving and calmer neighborhood streets
Interstate 80 is Richmond's main freeway. Caltrans planned a lighting and median barrier project (opens in a new tab) from near Buchanan Street to the Carquinez Bridge approach, passing through Richmond. The new barrier and lights were designed to cut glare from oncoming headlights. Caltrans expected the work to wrap up in fall 2025, with lane closures at night only. Practice I-80 after dark with a parent. Dim your high beams for oncoming cars, and keep your eyes on the right edge line if glare bothers you.
Off the freeway, Richmond is reshaping neighborhood streets. Through Travel Safe Richmond (opens in a new tab), the City Council approved a Local Roadway Safety Plan on July 19, 2023. Its goals include safer walking and biking near schools. The city's traffic safety program (opens in a new tab) installs speed humps, traffic circles, median islands and raised crosswalks. It also lists a pedestrian project on Solano Avenue. At a traffic circle, slow down, yield to cars already in it, and travel around to the right.
