Learning to drive in El Cerrito: a crossing beacon on San Pablo Avenue and changes on Central Avenue

San Pablo Avenue is El Cerrito's main street, and it now has a newer type of signal. At Eureka Avenue, Caltrans installed a pedestrian hybrid beacon (opens in a new tab), built to cut conflicts between walkers and cars on busy roads. The city cites a Tucson, Arizona, study that found 69 percent fewer pedestrian crashes after these beacons went in. Total crashes there fell by 29 percent. Treat a red beacon like any red light, and stop at the line while people cross.

Near I-80 at the Richmond line, Central Avenue faces changes under a Richmond-led project (opens in a new tab) with El Cerrito and Caltrans. Four signals sit close together there, and cars back up between them. The plan ends left turns at Pierce Street and swaps its signal for stop signs. San Mateo Street would be extended to a new signal at Central. Building is planned from summer 2027 to summer 2030. Until then, pick your lane early on Central, because the short blocks leave little room to merge.
