Learning to drive in Berkeley: Gilman Street roundabouts and San Pablo beacons

Leaving Interstate 80 at Gilman Street means meeting two roundabouts right away. Caltrans rebuilt the interchange with roundabouts on both sides of I-80 (opens in a new tab), replacing a confusing set of intersections. The finished project also added a bike and walking bridge over the freeway and a two-way cycle track along Gilman. Cars, riders and walkers all meet within a short distance. Slow down well before the entry, give way to cars already inside, and check the crosswalk at your exit.

San Pablo Avenue, State Route 123, is another street that needs care. Berkeley's Vision Zero Action Plan (opens in a new tab) counts an average of two deaths and 21 severe injuries from local crashes each year. Where bike boulevards cross San Pablo at Virginia and Hearst streets, Caltrans added pedestrian hybrid beacons (opens in a new tab) in 2023. A walker or rider presses a button, and overhead lights tell drivers to stop. A steady red beacon means stop and stay. A flashing red means stop, then proceed only after the crossing is empty.
